West Africa — Essential Travel Tips & Logistics
Health & Vaccinations
- Yellow fever vaccination: MANDATORY for all 16 West African countries. Carry physical yellow card at all times — it is checked at many airports and borders.
- Malaria prophylaxis: Required for all 16 countries. Begin Malarone or Doxycycline before departure. Consult travel health clinic 4–6 weeks before travel.
- Recommended vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies (extended stays), Meningococcal (Sahel zone: Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina).
- Water purification: Carry Sawyer Squeeze or SteriPen in all remote destinations. Bottled water in cities.
- Medical evacuation insurance: REQUIRED for all West Africa itineraries — minimum $100,000 cover. AMREF Flying Doctors or AIG Travel recommended.
- West African CFA Franc (XOF): used by 8 countries in the UEMOA zone (Senegal, Ivory Coast, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Niger). Pegged to EUR — very stable.
- USD cash is the most universally useful foreign currency across all 16 countries. Carry $500–1,000 in small denominations.
- Cards: increasingly accepted in capital cities. Always carry USD cash as backup — ATMs often out of service in rural areas.
- Airport exchange: generally poor rates — exchange at city banks or trusted hotel front desks.
ECOWAS Free Movement — Key Facts
- ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) enables visa-free travel for all 15 member state citizens — valid for 90 days across the bloc.
- Non-ECOWAS travellers: most countries now offer e-visas or visa on arrival. Always apply in advance to avoid delays.
- Land border crossings: Ghana–Togo–Benin and Senegal–Gambia are the smoothest. Guinea- Bissau–Senegal and Sierra Leone–Guinea are manageable. Always travel with multiple passport photos and USD cash for ‘facilitation’ fees.
- GREEN (Ghana, Senegal, Gambia, Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Cape Verde) Standard travel precautions. Excellent for first-time visitors.
- AMBER (Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Mali Dogon only): Visit only wit reputable specialist operator. Avoid street demonstrations and public gatherings. Monitor FCDO and State Dept advisories.
- RED (Burkina Faso, Niger, North/Central Mali): Africa Milestone DOES NOT offer these. D not book. Monitor for future.
- Dress modestly near mosques, traditional palaces, and in Muslim-majority areas — cover shoulders and knees.
- Greetings are critical: always greet before asking anything or entering any space. A brief greeting in local language earns enormous goodwill.
- Photography: always ask — particularly for people, ceremonies, and markets. Many people are uncomfortable being photographed without permission.
- Right hand for giving, receiving, and eating throughout Muslim West Africa.
- Ramadan: eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours in Muslim areas is disrespectful. Most tourist restaurants stay open.
